The annual Eastbourne Cycling Festival is coming back to the seaside town, and this year it’s over 2 days on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June. Now in its sixth year the organisers have put together a packed programme with something for everyone over the two days.
The festival is situated again on the Western Lawns on Eastbourne seafront, in front of the Grand Hotel, ideally positioned to head out onto the South Downs way and the country lanes, as well as being a short walk from the town centre.
On Saturday events kick off with The Beachy Head MTB Sportive – a chance to challenge yourself on a beautiful but testing ride around the South Downs.
Also on Saturday and new for this year is the ECF Duathlon, run/bike/run, taking in the beachfront promenade on the run and a bike circuit around Beachy Head.
To round off Saturday, in the evening will see the Beachy Head Hill Climb Time Trial, a chance to ride in the tracks of the Tour of Britain stars of 2014 taking on the famous climb to Beachy Head.
On Sunday there’s the Beachy Head sportive sponsored by the Tri Store, with 3 routes this year. In addition to the challenging 45 or 65-mile rides, there’s also a shorter 23 mile ride, all through the magnificent Sussex countryside.
Competitive races on the closed road circuit include the Eastbourne Cycling Festival Youth Championships, for the next generation of cycling superstars, 3rd category and 4th category races, sponsored by Shaw Harley-Davidson, and the return of the Penny Farthings, not to be missed. The races are:
Schools Relay races
Penny Farthing Championships (including Classic Bike Parade)
4th Category Road Race
3rd Category Road Race
Folding Bike Race
The Eastbourne Beach/Urban cross race
The circuit will also be open at certain times to all for a ride on traffic free roads, so bring your bike down and join the fun.
The finale of the festival will again be The Eastbourne Beach/Urban cross race using the closed road circuit, the Lawns and the beach.
A Harley-Davidson motor-bike will be leading out the riders in all the closed road circuit races, provided by sponsors Shaw Harley-Davidson, and in addition, the local owner’s chapter, 1066 HOG, will parade at midday on Sunday.
On the Western Lawns there will be exhibitors displaying the latest products the cycling industry has to offer, catering outlets and a bar, a pump track for all ages to try their skill on throughout the day, a Bikeability area and British Cycling Go Ride skills course for everyone to test themselves.
