East of the Pier Heritage Trail

Details

This area of beach was called ‘The Stade,’ a Sussex name for a beach where boats could be landed easily. Until 1880 the local fishing fleet was based here but was then forced to move to the east of the Redoubt when the sea wall was built.

There are information boards here on the promenade that tell you more about Fishing, Smuggling and Sea Defences.

A bandstand was located here from 1894 to 1922 when it was moved eastwards to the Redoubt Gardens. The inaugural performance was by the Brighton Corporation Band. A PR gaff?

There are further information boards across the road on Sea Houses Square alongside the cafe that give more information about this area called Sea Houses.
