Royal Parade,
East Sussex,
BN22 7AN

This stretch of promenade is called Royal Parade. In Victorian times there were many bathing machines located here. Promenade entertainment included buskers, minstrel groups, photographers, and rowing boats for hire. As early as 1912 you could a ride in a seaplane or else take a mystery tour in a charabanc.

The promenade from the Redoubt to the Pier is a sea wall with a depth of up to 20 feet (6m). As this part of the town is low-lying, this is vital to stop inundation by the sea. The completion of the wall in 1884 allowed the long frontage of hotels and guest houses along Royal Parade to be developed.
