Royal Hippodrome

Details

The Hippodrome is now a community theatre run by a trust. It was built in 1883 and designed by a celebrated architect called C J Phipps. The whole project was completed in 7 months. It is said to be the least altered example in the country of a Phipps theatre. It was re-named the Royal Hippodrome in 1904 following a major refit. Great store was always placed on the quality and respectability of its product. It was never a music hall. Bruce Forsyth was appearing in summer season here when he got the call to compere Sunday Night at the London Palladium.

There is a free History Corner here at the box office that you are welcome to visit to find out more about the history of entertainment in the town.
