The Great British Tennis Menu
18 May 2017
With National Strawberry Picking Day this weekend (Sat 20 May), we’re not only excited about the prospect of selecting punnet-loads of our fave fruit, but this iconic day also marks the countdown to the start of Eastbourne's tennis events season.
Late frosts have slowed down strawberry growing somewhat this winter, but the approaching sunnier skies will ensure that in a few weeks our local Sharnfold Farm will have plenty of 'pick your own' on offer for the strawberry connoisseur.
Synonymous with the green lush lawns of British tennis, a bowl of strawberries and cream and a glass of fizz or fruity Pimms is an absolute must – and thousands will be enjoying just that as the Aegon International Eastbourne serves up a treat from 23 June – 1 July.
Did you know....
Strawberries got their name from being bedded in straw. The straw keeps berries dry to prevent mould from damp soil.
7 of the World’s Top 10 Tennis Stars
Enjoying 7 of the world’s top 10 women players and some big hitting men too, the tournament promises a glitzy array of fast-paced tennis action in the intimate and relaxed surroundings of Devonshire Park.
Tickets sales are soaring more than ever this year – with many desperate to see Eastbourne’s very own Johanna Konta lift up the coveted trophy. Currently world number 6, she stands as good a chance as any.
Grab tickets now while you still can at www.lta.org.uk/major-events/Aegon-International-Eastbourne or sample what’s to come at the free entry day on Friday 23 June.
Kids also enjoy free entry over family weekend 24 – 25 June with adult tickets at just £5!
Or visit on Ladies Day, presented by Dove on Tuesday 27 June for stellar prizes, samples and the Dove Photobooth.
What else is on the menu?
Eastbourne truly is a tennis town and to demonstrate this, the fabulous 5 star Grand Hotel have been giving us a sneak peek at their new tennis themed menu. With cocktails to boot – tennis (or foodie) fans can enjoy some fruity tipples and a first class cream tea for the ultimate indulgence.
Available from 24 June right through to the end of Wimbledon fortnight, the 'Grand Slam', made with Midori Melon Liquor, ginger ale and fresh lime offers a zingy, refreshing kick, while the ‘English Picnic’ (pictured) is the ultimate indulgent treat.
Made with Chase English Rhubarb Vodka, strawberry syrup, fresh cream and frozen summer berries, we think this cool, creamy cocktail will have you hooked.
Anyone for tea?
The afternoon cream tea has been given a new spin for tennis week with an artfully decorated, fruit laden Pimms Jelly (pictured) and an English Strawberry and Cream Tartlet, along with freshly baked scones, Cornish clotted cream, warm Cumberland sausage rolls, eclairs and selection of sandwiches.
Go for grandeur in the Great Hall, relax on the pool terrace or find a quiet spot in one of the gorgeous, elegantly furnished lounges.
Costs £26 per person (Mon – Thurs) or £28.50 (Fri – Sun), with children’s options at £14.50, or upgrade with a glass of Canard Duchene Leonie NV champagne for £34.50/£37 respectively.
