Bandstand Makes Romantic Gesture
3 March 2007
Eastbourne Bandstand is the perfect place to find your one true love, according to Sussex man Richard Howlett.
The 34 year old solicitor based in Bexhill-on-Sea, was so taken with the location where he fell for first love Zoe Sayer, that he recently hired the venue in a bid to marry the woman who captured his heart there exactly 15 years ago!
The teenage sweethearts, who began dating in 1992 after meeting at the Bandstand, later split, eventually reuniting in 2002. They were due to celebrate their 6 March anniversary as normal until Richard surprised Zoe with an impromptu visit to the iconic seafront building.
An ecstatic Zoe said “When we arrived, the Bandstand was all lit up and a violinist was playing. I couldn't believe this was all for me! There was a single chair on the stage and a single red rose. Richard gave a beautiful speech followed by a proposal on one knee and gave me a beautiful diamond ring!”
Richard had one final surprise however as he revealed Zoe’s delighted parents had also taken part in the proceedings and had been watching from the balcony all along.
Zoe added “To have them there was just the icing on the cake. Of course, I said 'Yes'! but I was in so much shock I was rather delayed in my response ....apparently my Dad said 'Yes'! quicker than I did! It was just amazing, I am a very lucky girl”
The couple who live in Robertsbridge, East Sussex, plan to wed in Tuscany this September.
Eastbourne seafront is a popular venue for marriage proposals including one by airplane banner, witnessed by thousands at last year’s annual airshow, Airbourne.
The Bandstand is available for private hire throughout the year, and the 2007 season kicks off on Easter Sunday with traditional music from Eastbourne Silver Band. The busy programme of 150 concerts also features rock n roll, classical fireworks and tributes to the likes of Abba, Kylie and band of the moment Take That.
