Top World Biker Entertained at Extreme 2009

22 July 2009

Tens of thousands of visitors packed onto Eastbourne seafront this weekend to witness one of the World's top bikers impress at Eastbourne Extreme pushing crowd numbers into the record book.

Sam Pilgrim joined Martyn Ashton for the return of the Animal Relentless Bike Tour having just won the Bergamo Townhill event in Italy and bagging runner up in the T-Mobile Extreme Playgrounds Event in Germany. Crowds gathered around the ready made skate park on the eastern seafront to cheer Sam and Martyn on as they pushed limits with 180 degree flips and freestyle stunts on the bigger ramps and obstacles, despite the strong wind.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Susan Morris said "What a fantastic weekend! Extreme was action-packed from start to finish with visitors really making the most of the cool sporting action on Eastbourne seafront. With live music, daredevil demonstrations plus the chance to have a go at windsurfing with Spray Watersports, the free event certainly pulled in the crowds all making the most of the sunny weather and better than predicted forecast."

As well as welcoming back old favourites such as the Urban Shadows parkour team, Brighton and Kent Kite Flyers and the Kent Land Yachting Club, Extreme attracted a brand new attraction for 2009 with the VW Bus Stop bringing an authentic surf vibe on Sunday.

A cavalcade of classic VW Campers, Buggies and Beetles pulled onto the beach on Sunday morning for their annual Show and Shine Competition.

Plus with the all new ION Man Competition taking place off the beach with some of the country's top windsurfers battling it out in the Eastbourne shores, visitors were able to soak in a cool, festival atmosphere.

With visitors coming from across the country to make the most of the free event during their staycation, it meant a packed weekend for Eastbourne's hotels and guesthouses. Chairman of the Eastbourne Hospitality Association (EHA), Marco Giorgi said "Eastbourne Extreme is a very successful event and it is nice to see young people visiting the town."

The Extreme Stage sponsored by Bonners provided non-stop music all weekend with 14 bands on the billing creating a real buzz and perfect soundtrack for the adrenaline-fuelled event. 12 local bands enjoyed hourly slots on the Extreme stage, while Hijack the Radio and City of Ashes supported the Urban Shadows as they leapt across scaffolding opposite Eastbourne beach.

Eastbourne Extreme returns next July but those looking for another dose of high intensity and fast paced sporting action should put 21-23 August in their diaries now when Go Fast! Speed Days returns to Beachy Head. Attracting the world's most elite gravity riders, visitors will be able to cheer on racers as they compete in the UK leg of the World Downhill Skateboarding Championships.
