Eastbourne Extreme returns with a vengeance from 18-19 July and this year will feature the country's first ever ION-Man Contest with watersport enthusiasts set to battle it out on the south coast.

Teams of three are being invited to take part in a UK first at Eastbourne's free two-day extreme sports festival. Combining a fun series of challenges and competitions, ION-Man entrants will have to face rounds in windsurf racing, stand-up-paddleboard racing, kayaking, and a multi-discipline replay to test their endurance and find out if they can take the title and win an ION summer wetsuit.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Susan Morris said "Eastbourne Extreme is always an action-packed event with a real variety of intense sports on offer. I'm very excited by the new ION-Man contest bringing a competitive element to the event and I'm sure the various rounds will have visitors cheering along the coastline as entrants tough it out on the Eastbourne shores. With live music and extreme rides also available over the weekend, there will be something to keep everyone entertained at Extreme 2009."

This year's Extreme will also feature a North One-Hour Classic, a windsurfing competition that boasts a long history. Organised by the UK's number one windsurfer Nik Baker alongside Surfkraft's Ian Kraft, this challenge is being opened to all with prizes on offer for the best competitors.

With the opportunity for keen visitors to get in on the act too and try their hand at some of the extreme sports on offer at the festival, there will be taster sessions and demonstrations available in land, water and air pursuits.

And for those who just want to take in the festival atmosphere and chill on the beach, visitors can also look forward to another new addition in 2009 with a convoy of Volkswagen Campers, Beach Buggies and Beetles cruising onto the seafront on Sunday 19 July as the VW Bus Stop comes to town.

The top collection of Classic and Custom VW's will park on the beach for their annual Show & Shine Competition bringing a real surf vibe to the popular event.

A popular event for Eastbourne, attracting tens of thousands of visitors every year, Extreme visitors also look forward to enjoying live music from the Extreme stage, picnicking on the resort's beaches, jumping aboard an extreme funfair ride, and browsing stalls selling top sporting gear.
