Sharpen your Pencils, Get Snapping and Design a Postcard for Eastbourne

2 January 2008

Postcard Competition Sponsors and Judges

There is less than a month left for school kids and arty adults to get designing and snapping and enter the Design a Postcard competition, with the winning entries to be sold at the Tourist Information Centre and sent around the world by the millions of tourists who visit Eastbourne every year.

Anyone can enter by either drawing or taking a photograph of the town that would make an iconic postcard and lasting souvenir. Eastbourne Borough Council are organising the competition and with the deadline fast approaching on 31 January, they are keen to encourage lots more entries to give the judges a really tough decision.

Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Cllr Steve Wallis said "We have already received some great entries for the competition but there is still time left for kids to sharpen their pencils and get their colouring pads out, and for photographers to get their cameras ready to submit some really excellent designs. I want everyone living in Eastbourne to think of their favourite spot and then turn it into a postcard design that everyone can enjoy. With fantastic prizes up for grabs and the chance for international exposure, I would like to see as many entries as possible."

British Seaside postcards have been going strong for 113 years and are still the traditional holiday souvenir today. Eastbourne, nestled by the South Downs, with its picturesque promenade, award winning beaches and scenic coastline, is a popular seaside tourist destination and postcards are a staple of its souvenir industry, with almost 15,000 sold last year in the Tourist Information Centre alone.

Kids and adults alike are all invited to create a piece of history and enter the Design a Postcard competition with prizes awarded in two categories: under 16's and 16's and over.

The lucky winner of the under 16 category will receive a bumper selection of arts supplies for their school courtesy of Plan Ahead Arts Materials and Copying Service under the arches at 42A Commercial Road, plus £250 of Splat software for schools donated by Miller Waite Ltd.

Jane de Weck Photographic Studio is offering the 16's and over winner the chance to spend the day in her South Street Studio, where they'll be able to set up and shoot their own photos and pick up top tips from a professional photographer.

All entries should be marked clearly with name, age, school (if applicable), address and telephone number and sent to Design a Postcard Competition, Tourism Promotions, 68 Grove Road, Eastbourne, East Sussex, BN21 4UH.
