Design a Postcard for Eastbourne Competition

6 November 2007

Postcard Competition

Children and adults are being invited to produce an iconic Eastbourne postcard and create a piece of history as Eastbourne Borough Council teams up with Plan Ahead, Jane de Weck Photographic Studio and Miller Waite Limited to launch the ‘Design a Postcard' competition.

They're inviting artistic school kids and adults with a passion for photography, graphic design, drawing or painting to conjure up their own souvenir postcard of Eastbourne by designing an image of the town, with the winning designs to be sold in the Tourist Information Centre.

Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Cllr Steve Wallis said "This is a fantastic opportunity for those living in the town to capture the best of Eastbourne and turn it into a souvenir for everybody to enjoy. We want everyone to get involved and send us their pictures of Eastbourne. Be imaginative, be creative and get thinking. This is your chance for your favourite spot or design to get noticed with Eastbourne's visitors sending postcards around the world!"

British Seaside postcards have been going strong for 113 years and are still the traditional holiday souvenir today. Eastbourne, nestled by the South Downs, with its picturesque promenade, award winning beaches and scenic coastline, is a popular seaside tourist destination and postcards are a staple of its souvenir industry, with 14,000 sold since April this year in the Tourist Information Centre alone.

Design a Postcard is open to two age groups: under 16's and 16 years and over.

Sponsored by Plan Ahead, under 16's are being asked to produce their own designs of Eastbourne. The winning child will receive a bumper selection of arts materials for their school courtesy of Plan Ahead Art Materials and Copying Services under the arches at 42a Commercial Road, plus £250 of Splat software for schools, courtesy of Miller Waite Limited. The child will also see their winning design printed and on sale in the Tourist Information Centre.

The 16 years and over are being asked to do the same. This category is being sponsored by Jane de Weck Photographic Studio and is asking for your design or photograph of Eastbourne, with the winning picture to be sold at the Tourist Information Centre and Jane de Weck's South Street studio.

The winner will get the chance to work for a day with Jane de Weck in her South Street studio, where they'll be able to set up and shoot their own photos using first class equipment as well as pick up top tips from a professional photographer.

All entries should be marked clearly with name, age, school (if applicable), address and telephone number and sent to Design a Postcard Competition, Promotions Dept, 68 Grove Road, Eastbourne, East Sussex, BN21 4UH.

Entries must be your own work and only one entry per person is permitted. Entries close on 31 January 2008, with the winners announced shortly thereafter.
