Eastbourne has been named the sunniest place in the UK with an impressive 34.6 hours of sunshine a week.

 

The Halifax annual Quality of Life Survey billed Eastbourne at the top of the charts with the best sunshine records, beating rivals Isle of Wight and Gosport to the title of sunniest town in Great Britain. This year Eastbourne recorded its warmest April since records began 140 years ago, with a maximum temperature of 24°C on 15 April.

 

Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Cllr Steve Wallis said "This is fantastic news for Eastbourne and testament to the microclimate we have here. We are so lucky to be protected by the Downs and while places further inland are subjected to stormy weather, Eastbourne remains unaffected - proof that it really is the sunshine coast and a great place for both residents and visitors."

 

Eastbourne's history of record breaking sunshine makes it a top holiday spot for tourists with over 4 million visitors each year and a hot candidate when it comes to winning awards.

 

Earlier this year the town was announced the UK's most requested destination of 2007 by Co-op Travel and was also nominated as a finalist in the ‘Best UK Resort' category at the prestigious Group Leisure Industry Awards 2007.

 

The town was also awarded the Blue Flag award for its seafront for the fourth year in a row. After meeting stringent EU water quality directives and offering safe bathing and excellent facilities, Eastbourne's seafront with first class beaches and a picturesque promenade, is an ideal place for making the most of the sun.

 

To encourage visitors to be safe in the sun this year, lifeguards handed out free bottles of sun cream to bathers during the summer courtesy of Boots in Eastbourne.

 

If record sunshine statistics aren't enough to entice visitors, Eastbourne boasts a jam-packed programme of events each year too bringing record crowd numbers into the town. Seasoned favourites such as annual air show, Airbourne, and the International Women's Open tennis championship feature alongside events including extreme sports, vintage motoring and a beer festival.
