Murray Brothers Play at Devonshire Park
23 July 2009
Eastbourne's Devonshire Park has been visited yesterday by the World no.3 Andy Murray and his brother Jamie as they compete in the AEGON Summer County Cup.
Andy made a surprise appearance in yesterday's rounds at Devonshire Park after calling North of Scotland captain Ian Conway and asking if he could join the region's team. The North of Scotland's men's tennis team are playing in Group 1 at County Cup Week in Eastbourne and visitors to the free tournament watched the two brothers play in matches alongside each other on Devonshire Park's famous grass courts.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Susan Morris said "Wow! It's fantastic news that Andy asked to join the North of Scotland team and play at Devonshire Park. I'm sure that the team, County Cup organisers, and the spectators at Devonshire Park were thrilled to be able to watch one of the world's top players compete in the LTA tournament. With the AEGON International played here last month and attracting some of the World's most elite, we are extremely excited that the World number three has now also played at Devonshire Park."
The news that Andy was to join the team at Devonshire Park, which already included his brother Jamie, was kept very quiet with spectators pleasantly surprised when it was announced he would join yesterday's order of play and partner Owen Hadden.
The AEGON Summer County Cup is completely free to spectators and taking place all week through to Friday, visitors have the chance to watch one of the World's highest ranking players for free.
