Julian Sutherland-Beatson Paintings

Julian Sutherland-Beatson Paintings

Julian Sutherland-Beatson paints the landscape, coastline and urban areas 'At Home and Abroad'. Following on from his collection of Paris, London and New York paintings, this new show includes recent city and landscape paintings. Julian studied illustration and printmaking at Eastbourne College of Art for four years (latterly under printmaker Robert Tavener) before embarking on a career in graphic design and illustration.

Since 2004, when he had two paintings purchased by the House of Lords to complement an existing collection of period travel paintings, he has been painting and exhibiting in the UK and throughout Europe.

In 2008, Julian began a year long project painting Sussex landscapes (Sussex 365, A year in the Life) which culminated in an exhibition in 2010 of 200 of these paintings at Glyndebourne Opera house. He has returned every year since then, creating a daily painting throughout the Glyndebourne season reflecting on the changing weather, flora, buildings and visitors. Julian has also had work exhibited three times at the Royal Academy summer exhibition.

Objets trouves or 'found objects' derive their identity as art from the designation placed upon them by artists and from the social history that comes with the object. This may be indicated by either, its anonymous wear and tear, its recognisability as a consumer icon or purely through the incongruity of placement and context. The items in this exhibition are a mixture of objets trouves, assemblages and photographs from the collection of Julian Sutherland-Beatson.

Eastbourne is entered from the north via the A27 or the A22. If approaching from the A22, at the large roundabout just north of Polegate, follow the signs to Willingdon (3rd exit) through the traffic lights at Polegate, until you reach the Willingdon roundabout.

If approaching Eastbourne from the A27, at the junction with the A2270 traffic lights, turn right (signposted Polegate and Willingdon) and follow the A2270 until you reach the Willingdon roundabout.

At the roundabout take the second exit directed to the town centre (west). Follow straight on the A2270 until you come to a roundabout with the railway station on your left and the Prezzo restaurant on your right. Then turn right into Grove Road, keeping the library on your right and go past the police station, following signs for Devonshire Park, which is adjacent the College. The College will appear on your left in Grange Road. Old Wish Road is at the far end of the pitch which is in front of the school.

From other directions, head for the seafront and turn inland opposite the Martello Tower (the Wish Tower) joining Carlisle Road. Turn right into Grange Road and immediately right into Old Wish Road.

The Birley Centre is a 10 minute walk (or 5 minute taxi ride) from the station. Follow Gildredge Road to the end, then cross over South Street and Furness Road to College Road. The Birley Centre is situated at the end of the road on the right, at the junction between College and Carlisle Roads.
