East of the Pier Heritage Trail


At the junction of Sea Houses Square and Seaside you see a long cream painted building which is listed. This was originally called Ballroom House or the Assembly Rooms and later Livingstone House. Built in the early 1800s at the same time as the Redoubt garrison arrived, it served as function rooms for the military. Many years later it was used as a restaurant and tea rooms, and acted as a labour exchange for a period.

This section of Seaside has a prominent camber. This is because the road is built along the lower slope of a shingle bank. It defines the boundary between the shingle bank and the previously marshy area to the north.

There are some information boards on Sea Houses Square that describe this area in the 1840s
