Film PG, Tue 25 Jul 2017, £4

Sneakers is a 1992 American comedy caper film, in which a security professional finds his past coming back to haunt him, when he and his unique team are tasked with retrieving a particularly important item.

It stars Robert Redford, Dan Aykroyd, Ben Kingsley, Mary McDonnell, River Phoenix, Sidney Poitier, and David Strathairn.

Despite its relative obscurity, Sneakers is quickly becoming a cult favorite of the internet generation. It’s a perfect blend of romance, tech and adventure that highlights the increasing importance of information. The always beautiful Mary McDonnell as Liz doesn’t hurt, either.

The soundtrack is arguably the best of the late great James Horner‘s film scores pre-dating Braveheart, with an ethereal jazzy feel that sets the mood from the opening credits and takes you on a wonderful journey to the other side of the two hour movie.

For an early nineties movie, Sneakers is remarkably forward thinking in its script and plot. Many of its themes have only become more relevant with the flowering of the data network.

This classic film will be preceded by a short powerpoint presentation by film buff and UGT technician Chris Leach, who’ll be giving an upbeat glimpse into who’s who in the film, what impact it made at the time, and what to look out for.
