Join Tom Dommett, National Trust Archaeologist for the first Culture and Cake of 2017 - Heritage on the Edge: Archaeology of the Seven Sisters.

From the first farmers in the Neolithic to Second World War fighter pilots, from Bronze Age burials to Coastguard’s cottages, the cliffs around Birling Gap have incredible stories to tell about human endeavour, stories of life and death at the edge of the sea. It is a landscape which has changed dramatically, and continues to change as the shoreline erodes. These natural forces are now putting archaeology – the evidence which connects us to our ancestors – under threat. The National Trust has been working with volunteers and professional archaeologists over the last two years to investigate and record thousands of years of history along the Seven Sisters coastline before it is lost to the sea. National Trust Archaeologist Tom Dommett will outline how we have gained a greater insight into this rich cultural landscape – from landscape surveys and documentary research to oral histories and excavations – and describe the discoveries which allow us to paint a picture of life here by the sea.

Culture & Cake begins at 2:30pm.

Price includes cake and a hot drink.

All ticket purchases will be issued in the form of an E-Ticket that will be emailed through and available for you to print. Tickets must be presented upon entry. All tickets are non-refundable.
