Join Kasey Ball, Heritage Assistant to discover 'There and Back Again' (but not always): Discover how a Roman statue from Eastbourne ended up in Canada and other tales of museum objects journeying far from home.
To own an object in a museum is to have power over it - power to display, to interpret, and often, to profit.
But what happens when museums are asked to relinquish that power?
As international law continues to evolve post-colonization, the question of who owns cultural property becomes an increasingly poignant and provocative issue. Using two Eastbourne statues and their journey to Toronto, Canada, as a starting point, this talk will explore the ethically troubling origin of museums, how the ownership of objects is transferred to institutions, and the relatively unchartered quandary of repatriation – the process deriving from a moral responsibility to give objects back.
Starts at 2:30pm.
Ticket includes a slice of cake and a hot drink.
All ticket purchases will be issued in the form of an E-Ticket that will be emailed through and available for you to print. Tickets must be presented upon entry. All tickets are non-refundable.
