One of the south coast's most historic landmarks, discover over 200 years of history at this Napoleonic fortress, named one of the top ten military museums in the UK.
Built to defend the south coast from Napoleon's forces it still stands as a unique monument to that time and now houses the largest military collection of its kind in the south of England, along with a vibrant events programme.
Entry to the parade ground and battlements is free, with admission charged only inside the fortress and military exhibition. Plus get a free return visit with each ticket!

Largest Military collection in the South of England
Housing a fascinating collection of military history and memorabilia, the Redoubt houses the official Military Museum of Sussex covering the three regiments of The Royal Sussex Regiment, The Queen's Royal Irish Hussars Regiment and the Sussex Combined Services Collection.
Explore the Fortress

Gun Platforms
A living fortress, the Redoubt offers plenty to explore from hidden rooms in the casements to gun platforms and a parade ground complete with sentry boxes.

The Parade Ground
Used for many events throughout the year, the parade ground is often used for re-enactments, dances and remembrance.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Button Maker

This fascinating exhibition looks at the significance of uniforms up until the end of the 19th Century. Curated by Katherine Buckland.
Archive Fever

29 March - 10 May
Eastbourne artist Fenya Sharkey, displays her exhibition inspired by the Redoubt's extensive collection of letters and diaries.
Fun for Kids!

With interactive exhibits too, try lifting a cannonball or guard a sentry box and have your picture taken. Children can also visit the new art room to make their own creations or try out a military uniform for size!
Events at the Redoubt Fortress

A varied programme of events takes place throughout the fortress, from napoleonic re-enactments to wartime tea dances and Blackout & Bunting events.
NEW: Vintage Styled Tea Room 'The Outpost'

Step into The Outpost for tea and cake with vintage inspired elegance. Displaying items from the Redoubt collection, the new boutique style cafe is inspired by the era with original decor.

The Redoubt Fortress is situated on Royal Parade and is half a mile east of Eastbourne Pier.By Bus
Buses 1, 1A, IX, the Loop, and 55 all stop on Seaside Road and Bus 99 stops on Royal Parade.Parking
On-street and Pay & Display parking is available. There are 3 disabled parking bays on Royal Parade.

Volunteer at the Redoubt

If you are handy with a screwdriver or paint brush, come and join our maintenance team. We meet once a month during the summer season and once a week during the winter closed period.
Collection Management

With more than 30,000 objects in the museum volunteers can assist with the care and management of the collections from medal cleaning to archive scanning. Available on a project by project basis.
Become a Gallery Steward

Chat to visitors and provide short tours in this fascinating voluntary role on a morning or afternoon basis (min 3.5 hours). Also involves assisting museum staff in keeping the exhibits clean and tidy.
Education & Learning

From tours to dedicated education space, we are happy to work with teachers on the Second World War and can also offer outreach sessions for Key Stage 1 & 2 Anglo Saxons, Romans, Victorians & Tudor.
Accessibility & Disabled Parking

Due to the historical nature of the building, access is via stairs from Royal Parade or the promenade, however we can offer a stair climber when booked in advance. There are also 3 disabled parking bays.
