Eastbourne Borough Council's Events Department work pro-actively in our approach to sustainability at all of our events including Airbourne. We strive to ensure that sustainability is at the forefront of our decision making as opposed to being an afterthought. Airbourne brings a significant number of people into our town over the course of four days and we try our best to make our event carbon friendly.
2020 marked the start of our Carbon Offset Scheme. Further details will be announced in the coming weeks but we have already put in arrangements to plant trees on the stretch of the A259 between Eastbourne and East Dean, as well as working with local schools to achieve a similar outcome.
We work closely with our food and drink vendors and other traders to encourage them to avoid the use of single use plastics (SUPs) at our events. We also work with Eastbourne Borough Council's Neighbourhood First team to minimise our wastage and ensure our recycling is effectively processed.
Eastbourne Borough Council announced a carbon emergency in 2019 and pledged to be carbon neutral by 2030. A group of over 200 volunteers have been set up under the collaborative umbrella of the Eastbourne Eco Action Network. Take a look at their website to find out more about what they are doing.
One of the biggest emissions of carbon into the environment during Airbourne is in fact not the aircraft, contrary to popular belief, but from the vehicles of those who are travelling into the event. We actively encourage utilising the public transport on offer to get to our event, and in doing so, doing your bit for the environment.
