About
Visit Langney Priory which is considered to be the oldest building in Eastbourne. Explore the gardens and encounter art works created by participants of the Monday Art Group with Compass Community Arts, Eastbourne.
Hidden Spaces: art and nature is led by artist Christine Gist in collaboration with Fenya Sharkey, director of Compass Community Arts, an organisation which provides creative activities and services for people dealing with mental health issues. Once the Covid 19 lockdown was lifted, it was decided to create opportunities for the Monday Art Group to work on outdoor projects. Langney Priory is the perfect location as this unique site is nestled amongst the trees and hidden within Langney Village housing estate on Etchingham Road. Parts of the Priory date back to the reign of Edward the Confessor and it is an unfamiliar site even to Eastbourne residents.
The gardens, both tended and wild, include an orchard, the remains of a kitchen garden, greenhouses, bee hives and hidden spots to enjoy nature. Some members of Monday Art Group and Christine Gist are creating temporary sculpture interventions using found materials and objects. Others are producing detailed drawings and experimenting with new materials, these will be displayed in one of the Priory's buildings. During Heritage Open Days, free creative activities will take place and some of the group will be on site to explain about the project and their work. Visitors are encouraged to explore the gardens at their leisure and are welcome to make repeat visits during Heritage Open Days
