About
Josef Von Sternberg, 1930 (U) 89 mins
This screening is presented in association with our friends at Eastbourne Rainbow.
Dietrich was known for her androgynous roles and her bisexuality, rumours have long swirled that she had a number of affairs with women, including Claudette Colbert and Edith Piaf. Morocco is best known as the origin of that iconic scene featuring Dietrich performing dressed in a man’s tailcoat. Halfway through the act, she plants a kiss on another woman – obviously scandalous for the time.
“With this romantic reverie, Marlene Dietrich made her triumphant debut before American audiences and unveiled the enthralling, insouciant persona that would define her Hollywood collaboration with director Josef von Sternberg.” – Criterion Collection
