Airbourne People's Charity Nominations Are Cleared for Take Off

16 January 2019

Following on from its inaugural success in 2018, nominations are once again open for the public to nominate their favourite good cause to become ‘The People’s Charity’ at the 2019 Airbourne: Eastbourne International Airshow.

Airbourne's People Charity
Since 2009, charities and good causes have benefitted from over £84,000 of donations from the four day air show with three charities chosen each year to assist in the bucket collection, all benefiting from 30% of the total amount raised.

Supporters can nominate their favourite charities now, with all nominees then invited to complete their own application in a bid to be chosen as ‘The People’s Charity’. The selected charity will appear at the show alongside two other good causes chosen by the Rotary Clubs of Sovereign Harbour and Hailsham.

All nominations for 2019 must be received by 18 February and then, following a shortlisting process, the final three charities will be announced and the public vote opened.

Last year saw Chestnut Tree House named as the people’s choice after almost 4,000 people took part in the vote, with many of their volunteers helping to collect money at the airshow bucket collections each day.

Eastbourne Borough Council Lead Cabinet Member for Tourism and Enterprise, Cllr Margaret Bannister said “We were delighted with how well the People’s Charity was received last year with an overwhelming response from the general public who suggested a wide range of charities and good causes to support at Airbourne. We hope that this year will be just as popular for nominations as the show offers such a great opportunity for a local charity to raise much needed funds.

“The Rotary Clubs do a great job with organising the collections, but we always need more volunteers to help shake those charity buckets and ensure visitors to the Airshow dig deep and donate.”

By providing volunteer bucket collectors to assist in gathering donations, the chosen People’s Charity will not only receive valuable funds, but will also receive promotion via Airbourne’s social media channels plus a feature in the Airbourne souvenir programme, further helping to raise awareness.

The 2018 show saw a total of £27,953.61 raised with 70% going towards the ongoing flying costs and 30% split between Charlie’s Challenge, Citizens Advice Bureau and the ‘People’s Charity’ choice of Chestnut Tree House.

To nominate your chosen charity, complete the short form on or post your nomination to Tourism & Enterprise, College Road, Eastbourne BN21 4JJ by Monday 18 February.

Following the winner’s announcement, the two runner-up charities will be offered charity partner status at either this year’s Magnificent Motors or Beach Life Festival.
