Discover Napoleonic Life at the Redoubt with the 79th Cameron Highlanders

17 May 2019

The 79th Cameron Highlanders will be bringing the sights and sounds of Napoleonic Britain to life at the Eastbourne Redoubt this weekend.

Cameron Highlanders

Visitors can expect an explosive time accompanied by the sound of musket fire as the soldiers help keep the fortress safe from invasion. Throughout the weekend a small detachment of the Highlanders will be in the parade ground demonstrating a series of military manoeuvres including drills, bayonet use and sword techniques.

There will also be re-creations of camp life with the camp followers covering amongst other things barrack cookery, uniform repair and tending to the wounded with some examples of gruesome Georgian surgical practices in amputation, bullet extraction and teeth removal!

The Cameron Highlanders will be available to chat to visitors about all things Napoleonic sharing their knowledge of camp life to how a musket works and will be dispelling some of the myths surrounding this tumultuous period in British history.

Open on weekends only throughout this year, the 200 year old fortress is currently undergoing both investigatory and restoration work. Visitors can though explore the newly opened casemates and caponiers on a free hard hat guided tour to hear tales of some of the former soldiers, inmates and residents! Tours are available at 10am, 12pm and 2pm and should be booked in advance online.

See the 79th Cameron Highlanders at the fortress between 10.00-17.00 on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May and then again on 3 and 4 August. The Outpost Café will also be open serving hot drinks, sandwiches and cakes from 9.30 until 17.00.

Tickets for the free hard hat tours are available to book online at or via the Eastbourne Tourist Information Centre located on Cornfield Road.
