The lily pond at Bateman's, East Sussex.

Details

Bateman’s is a writers retreat. Kipling loved this 17th century house. It was a little piece of paradise, a place where he could enjoy family life. If you ever have a chance to feel close to the world’s famous poet, Rudyard Kipling, then this is the place to do it.

The rooms are much as he left them: oriental rugs and artifacts from his Eastern adventures, a book lined study, his Nobel prize certificate for literature, a phonograph playing music and his Rolls Royce still in the garage.

A beautiful garden with an orchard, herb garden, pond and wildflower meadow surrounds the old stone house. Just a short stroll by the river reveals a watermill and beyond that there are farmland walks.

Our gift shop specialises in second-hand Kipling books and the licensed self-service tearoom serves lunches and light refreshments. Children’s activity sheets are available throughout plus family fun days and lots of other events.
