The Big Dig will take place from 9th - 11th June. We are asking people to dig archaeological test pits in their own gardens to give them a snapshot of how parts of Eastbourne developed as a downland settlement and to find out more about the daily lives of the town’s residents throughout history.

We will also be excavating test pits in Old Town Rec, Hampden Park and near Palesgate Way Playground in Old Town – visitors are very welcome to pop along, find out what we’ve uncovered and have a chat with the archaeologists on site. 10am – 4pm.

On 10th & 11th June alongside The Big Dig headquarters in Motcombe Gardens, visitors can find out how flint tools are made, find out more about medieval pilgrim badges and how they are forged, travel back in time with some medieval musicians, pick a side in the Civil War with some 17th century soldiers and, for those brave enough – visit the 17th century herbologist for some historic and gruesome medicine!

The Big Dig is part of Changing Chalk - a partnership of organisations, led by the National Trust, working together to restore lost habitats, bring histories to life and offer new experiences in the outdoors. It is supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, players of People’s Postcode Lottery and The Linbury Trust.
