Southern Head Fishing Co Ltd

Details

Founding Director Bob Page left school at 15 and worked on fishing boats in Newhaven for 3 years. He bought his first boat at the age of 18. In 1976 with the help of two backers, they formed Southern Head Fishing Co Ltd and bought the 32ft "Southern Head".

Southern Head is a large area of rock six miles south of Eastbourne hence the name of the company. 3 years later, this was replaced with the 40ft "George Clements".

In 1982 Bob bought out his backers and had the "Hahnenkamm" built, moving to work off nearby Eastbourne beach. Working from the beach allows the public more access, so people tried to buy some of our catch as we landed it. His wife Jan started selling the fish from the store in 1986.

The response from the public being able to buy fish this fresh was phenomenal and very soon following the success, more staff were employed to help cope with the increase in demand. Other boats started landing their fish to the shop and we employed the fishermens wives to work in the shop, thus keeping it in the family, so to speak! With the shop getting busier each week, the boat was sold and the focus was concentrated solely on the shore side of things.

Over the years teh shop has built up a very good relationship with the local community, keeping the quality of the fish and friendly staff, who can advise on cooking and preparing all types of fish as the main priority.

We now have as many as 30 boats landing their catch to our shop, (but with a main stay of 10) they are some of the most up to date boats on the South Coast, and are part of the responsible fishing scheme. The company is now 32 years old, and last year turnover topped 2 million pounds, with a staff of 15.

Some of the fishermen have been landing to us for over 15 years. Joe Watt has 3 boats, "Meridian", "Clar Innis" and "Havana", Pete Newton Smith has 2 boats "Hope Gap" and "Birling Gap" and Graham Doswell and Mick Scott have 1 each. However all are very good fishermen and are a very important part of our business.

The main species caught off Eastbourne are (in order of quantity landed) Dover Sole, Plaice, Sea Bass, Skate, Crab, lobster, Cod, Red Mullet, Squid, Dogfish, Brill and Turbot.

Between the three directors, Bob, Jan and Andy and all of our 15 strong staff, we are very proud to have brought the business to where it is now...... Very much a part of Eastbourne community, supplying the freshest fish and shellfish on the South Coast
