Plus, a recent study led by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has suggested that exercise could be as good at drugs at reducing high blood pressure.

The study found "compelling evidence" that mixing cardiovascular exercise – such as running, walking, cycling or swimming – with strength and/or resistance training seemed particularly effective in lowering blood pressure.

So here are some suggestions to help you keep fit and active around Eastbourne.

is one of the best forms of exercise because it's cheap and accessible to everyone. Increasing the amount you walk is easier than you think and you can make it a social affair by walking with a friend or getting the whole family involved.

Why not take a refreshing walk along the seafront, the flat promenade means it’s perfect for those who have mobility issues or for pushchairs. For those who feel a bit more adventurous, hit the South Downs and really burn off all those mince pies.

makes more demands on your body than walking, so if you're just starting out, you should build up the speed and duration of your runs gradually. But you could take in a number of Eastbourne’s most famous landmarks with a jog along the seafront.

Pass the Bandstand, the Pier down to the Redoubt Fortress and if you’ve the stamina, keep going all the way along to Sovereign Harbour. But don’t worry if you start to feel a little puffed out, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants along the way to stop at for some much needed refreshment!

motcombe swim
is the third most popular type of exercise in the UK, after walking and running. Most pools offer lessons if you're a beginner or you want to improve. Head along to the Sovereign Centre or Motcombe Pool both of which will be open from 27th December.

Or if you're brave enough, why not take a dip in the sea - while it might be cold, swimming in the sea at this time of year can increase blood flow and improve your circulation.

Dig out those racquets or golf clubs that have been buried at the back of the cupboard and get back onto the course or court. Or if you’re looking to get started then the Sports Open Day hosted by Sport Eastbourne on Friday 30 December is the perfect opportunity to get active.

This free day at the Shinewater Sports & Community Centre will allow you to try everything from badminton to gymnastics!

Go on give it a go and work off all those mince pies!
