From stately homes and street names to statues and memorials across Britain, David explains how Black British history is woven into our heritage more than some may think, after years of being presented as a separate specialism and neglected in today’s academic textbooks. Eastbourne’s very own black history was revealed last year in his BBC2 series Black and British: A Forgotten History as David documented the discovery of the Beachy Head Women, a skeleton found in the Eastbourne area, with firm sub-Saharan ancestry, who lived and grew up here during the Roman period. His award winning book of the same name will be available to buy on the night and David will be happy to sign copies.

David Olusoga, is a British-Nigerian historian, writer and presenter on BBC’s new landmark Arts series Civilisations. David’s work has gained huge recognition for his investigation into Britain’s forgotten black history, winning various awards including the BAFTA winning Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners (BBC 2) and both the Longman-History Today Trustees Award and the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize for his book Black and British: A Forgotten History which will be available to buy on the night. Readers of The Guardian, The Observer and BBC History Magazine will also be familiar with David’s work as a regular contributor to the top publications.

The monthly talks continue on 6 December as Dr Matt Pope looks into evidence of a possible Neanderthal heartland across the now submerged English Channel.

‘A Black History of Britain’ starts 7.30pm on Wednesday 15 November at Eastbourne Town Hall. Tickets cost £10 and include a glass of wine on arrival. Please visit www.HeritageEastbourne.com to buy tickets.
