Grand Design Beach Hut Unearthed on Eastbourne Beach

The first of Eastbourne’s iconic beach huts has been unveiled on Eastbourne beach, following on from an ambitious international architectural design competition.

‘What unearthed?’ is one of the winning entries from the competition to create brand new grand designs in a series of iconic seafront landmarks, which will be available to hire.

Created by award-winning Irish architect Stephen Foley and fabricated by Kevin Hoy of Cutting Edge UK, the contemporary design was inspired by recent nationally significant archaeological discoveries in Eastbourne, including the Beachy Head Lady.

The winning design has taken root east of the Pier on the beach opposite Seahouses Square and offers a light airy space during the day and a ghost-like illumination at night.

Stephen who was recently given the RIAI Future Award for Emerging Architects said “We loved working on this project because it combines a lot of themes in our design research such as identity, technology and collaboration. We worked very closely with the fabricators in order to make it as special as possible and also had input from Heritage Eastbourne during the build.

It does a lot with very little, responding to the site and brief in a monumental way but also to the budget in terms of being innovative with materials and structure.”

The bespoke beach hut will offer both pop-up events and beach hut hire for those seeking a truly unique experience. A second beach hut is due to be installed in September.

Residents and visitors will have the opportunity to be one of the first few tenants in a competition to win a day’s hire of the brand new hut.

Eastbourne Borough Council Lead Cabinet Member for Tourism and Enterprise, Cllr Margaret Bannister said “We are delighted to see the first beach hut take shape, creating some key landmarks and focal points on the Coastal Culture Trail which runs between Eastbourne and Hastings.

As well as offering a unique beach hut hire experience for those looking to upgrade their visit to the beach to something special, the new hut also offers plenty of potential for events over the coming months.”

Part of the ‘Driving Devonshire Forward’ initiative and funded by the Coastal Communities Fund, The Huts design project aims to contribute to the area’s regeneration and enhance the town’s reputation in embracing culture and design. Judges included ground breaking artist and sculptor Alex Chinneck.

To win a free day in the new Beach Hut visit and enter online by 11 August.
