Devonshire Park Groundstaff Nominated for Top Award

16 September 2019

Groundstaff at Eastbourne’s Devonshire Park have once again been nominated for a prestigious industry award which recognises the very best grounds teams across the world of sport.

Devonshire Park Team Nets Triple Award Nomination and a Place at European SummitHead Groundsman, Danny Negus and his team at Devonshire Park are finalists in the Professional Tennis Courts Grounds Team category at the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) Industry Awards. The team are the current holders of this award, having netted the prize at last year’s ceremony.

In this category, the team are up against groundstaff from the All England Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon, with the winners announced at a glittering award ceremony held in Birmingham on 30 October.

Eastbourne Borough Council Lead Cabinet Member for Tourism and Enterprise, Cllr Margaret Bannister said “Our congratulations to Danny Negus and his team for once again receiving a nomination at the prestigious IOG awards. The courts at Devonshire Park are renowned as some of the best in the world and to be shortlisted in this high-profile category is testament to the hard work and dedication put in by the whole team.”

The IOG Awards event is a highlight of the annual SALTEX exhibition at the Birmingham NEC, Europe’s largest event for grounds care and green space management.

This year as part of the £54 million Devonshire Quarter redevelopment, two new courts have been created at Devonshire Park which will be in use for the 2020 tournament season. As well as all year round turf management with an annual winter renovation programme, the team also set up infrastructure and break down courts after each tournament, maintain herbaceous displays and conduct their own mechanical repairs.

In addition to the courts at Devonshire Park, which play host to the Nature Valley International each June, the grounds team also manage courts in at the Meads Tennis Club and the greens at Eastbourne Downs Golf Course.

Danny will also be a delegate at the European Turf Summit to be held in Portugal in October and will attend alongside Head Groundsmen from other sports venues including Real Madrid, Ajax and Manchester City, in a bid to spark further innovation across the industry.

Following his attendance at the summit last year, Danny arranged for a delegation of horticulture students from Plumpton College to tour the Devonshire Park to learn more about their grass-court preparation process and the venue’s state-of-the-art irrigation system.

The Nature Valley International returns from 19 – 27 June 2020 and tickets for the event will go on sale from 1 October. For more information visit www.lta.org.uk/nature-valley-international.
