A Stitch in Time Raises Thousands for the Redoubt Fortress

29 October 2018

A group of local knitters who have created an assortment of gifts including a knitted lighthouse and Martello Tower, all using patterns taken from different historical periods, have raised £1,600 for the Redoubt Fortress.

Knit for Glory group

The Knit for Victory group was formed following the successful ‘Stitch for Victory’ exhibition which took place at the Redoubt in 2011. The twelve knitters and craft volunteers who meet fortnightly, have made numerous items ranging from balaclavas and gloves to Christmas gifts that are then sold in order to raise much needed funds for the fortress.

The group knit using patterns taken from different historical eras and collect and rescue patterns that form part of social history. The oldest member of the group is over 90 years old and they continue to encourage others to learn how to knit, ensuring these skills are then passed on for generations to come.

Eastbourne Borough Council Lead Cabinet Member for Tourism and Enterprise, Cllr Margaret Bannister, who received the donation on behalf of Heritage Eastbourne, said “It’s wonderful to receive this donation to the Redoubt from the Knit for Victory group. Bringing history to life is a key part of what makes the Redoubt such a great place to visit, and through the tireless fundraising work of this group of local knitters, they continue to keep not only this valuable craft alive but are also helping to maintain the future of the fortress itself.”

The money raised will now go towards the Redoubt restoration fund and will be used to help finance essential accessibility improvements at the 200 year old heritage site including a lift for improved access.

The Redoubt is open every day from 10am to 5pm until 4 November with daily tours, costing £4.50 per adult and kids go free.

During the renovation work, the fortress will reopen from 23 March 2019 at weekends only for guided hard hat tours, events and the Outpost Café. Heritage Eastbourne will also be running The Story of Eastbourne temporary exhibition next year from 16 February in a new heritage hub located in Terminus Road.
