Star-Studded Evening of Spaceships, Stargazing and Sci-Fi Films at Redoubt Fortress

Free stargazing at the Redoubt Fortress returns for another out of this world evening of stars and sci-fi sensations on 4 March, with a screening of the Stanley Kubrick cult classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, complete with the Fortress’ very own spaceship.

Eastbourne’s iconic Redoubt Fortress sets for the ultimate stargazing experience as the 200 year old Fortress’ coastal location makes for crystal clear night skies. Gazers will be treated to a sky that is rich in stars with the incredible constellations Orion and Taurus clear to see. The crescent Moon will be in its first quarter and to the south of Venus and Mars which will also make an appearance in Eastbourne’s dark skies. This stargazing session will be the perfect chance to catch a stellar view of Venus before it disappears into the sunset towards the end of the month.

The Redoubt’s very own spaceship and monolith are amongst the film props recreated from 2001: A Space Odyssey which will transport viewers to another dimension after an evening of perusing at the planets.

The free event is run by Eastbourne Astronomical Society whose infinite knowledge of the night sky can be heard during a 30 minute talk in Casemate 20. Telescopes are on offer for stargazers to peek through or the Redoubt Fortress offers several cosy spots to marvel at the stars from.

Sensational Sci-Fi Classics

When Dr Bowman and other astronauts are sent on a mysterious mission, their ship’s computer system, HAL, begins to display increasingly bizarre behaviour leading up to a tense showdown between man and machine in a mind-bending trek through time and space.

The film costs £6 per person (not suitable for children under 12) and begins at 7:30pm, with a 20 minute interval. The Outpost café is open from 6pm-10:30pm, providing the perfect opportunity to grab popcorn and refreshments amongst other novelty treats.

Stargazing at the Redoubt Fortress is on 4 March from 6-8pm, free and suitable for all ages. The screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey will take place from 7:30pm-10:20pm. For more information visit
