World Car Free Day comes to Eastbourne - A day to put pedestrians first.
World Car Free Day takes place during the Eastbourne Walking Festival. Adopted by cities and towns throughout the world we are delighted Eastbourne is embracing this important initiative for the first time.
A circular Car Free Day walking route has been created for this year’s festival programme joining the west side of the town to the east. Find the roads closed to traffic in St Anthony’s, Devonshire, Upperton and Old Town and on the way you’ll discover that each ward and road have their own distinct character and charm.

The creation of this walking route also supports the return of the popular walking game Beat the Street. A fun, free initiative that sees the town transformed into a giant game. See how far you can walk on Car Free day. Click here to register.
Eastbourne’s Car Free Day and walking route has been developed by East Sussex College student and youth parliamentarian Tom Nevill with the support of Antonia Lucas from the Walking Festival team and Mayor Steve Wallis and Councillors David Tutt, Peter Diplock, Robin Maxted and Helen Burton.

“I’m encouraging the people of Eastbourne to adopt Car Free Day during the town’s walking festival. I want to show other young people what they can do to tackle climate change. Reducing cars on the road improves air quality and goes a little way towards reducing carbon emissions. The experience of closing a road has opened my eyes into what it takes to make change and that collaboration is key. My #Eastbournecarfreeday campaign seeks to encourage school administrators, parents, students and pupils across the town to consider walking, cycling, scooting and public transport as an alternative to a car journey.”
